Canada Pursuing Free Trade Agreement with Honduras
On Friday February 11, 2011, Honorable Minister of International Trade, Peter Van Loan announced Canada’s pursuit to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement between Canada and Honduras. Minister Van Loan said, “Honduras offers promising opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers. In fact, during the first 11 months of 2010, Canadian merchandise exports were up almost 20 percent over the previous year.”
A FTA between the two countries would be very beneficial for both countries and would further anchor Honduras on the international stage as a great place to invest. The Marriott, Hilton, InterContinental, and Holiday Inn are among the name brand business hotels operating in Honduras, and the Westin, Nikki Beach, and Raffles organizations have each announced plans to build luxury resorts on the Bay Islands. Plans are underway for residential villas and luxury hotels on the Caribbean Coast as well (www.hondurasnfo.hn).
